A pessimist would be frustrated he let in 5 goals and blew 2 leads forcing his team to come back at the end just to get a point. The pessimist would feel like if he had made one more fucking save his team would have won. A pessimist would feel like he let his team down.

Wanna guess how I feel?

I have recently written about my current hard luck hockey team: “the Stonemen” A great group of folks with big hearts and a good attitude. Unfortunately that has not translated into a lot of goals or any wins on the ice this season. With a final record that looks like 0-21-1 including playoffs this go round could be described as a train wreck from a numbers standpoint. So in the two or so weeks since I last posted a few things have come together and as it turns out my hockey landscape has changed radically. I am now playing for two teams, and only playing goal for one of them. Confused? Yeah, me too. Hold on and I will break it down all bullet point style for you.

1- The Stonemen fight hard, play well, and lose 2-1 in their only real playoff game. There is discussion after the game about the next season. I say I will return.
2- Hockey Trish, the director at the rink where I used to play calls and makes me an offer I can’t refuse to come back and play there. It seems they are critically short on goalies and are making CRAZY DEALS.
3- I post to a goal tending community site to ask some questions about the goalie pads I wear. (Yes, I am that guy)
4- I get a PM from a guy who skates for Keagan’s. A team that the Stonemen played against before we switched rinks. (The one where Hockey Trish works) He asks me to tend net for them.
5-I agree to play for Keagan’s, fill out the paperwork with Hockey Trish, and make it official.
6- I inform my Stonemen team about Keagan’s but tell them that I can still play goal for them as well.
7- I get an Email from Jason, a kid who has filled in for the Stonemen (remember them?) in my absence and is interested in playing goal for us next season. He is as good if not better than me.
8- I hatch a clever plot, Ok it with the team captain, buy new regular skates, and am now going to play forward for the Stonemen.
9- So to review. Position A = forward for the Stonemen, Position B = netminder for Keagan’s
Wshew…

Oh and did I mention that Keagans has won the championship the last three years running? Yeah, I am going from playing goal for a team that did not win one game to a team that rarely loses ever. So, you know… no pressure or anything. I am looking forward to the new season with both teams though. Playing forward should be fun, and we will see if I can elevate my game in goal for this new team.
Wish me luck, tonight is my first game with Keagan’s.

More Soon…

So the ill fated Stonemen Hockey team that I play for this season had our final game last night. We lost. Again. We lose a lot, a whole lot actually. Here, I ran the numbers, take a look:

Final numbers for the season:
Win/loss/Ties: 0-19-1
Goals For per game: 1.2
Goals Against per game: 5.15

I don’t know whats worse, our record or the fact that I am pleased with only a 5.15 goals against average. ( That is total number of goals scored in a season divided by games)

Technically we have 1 or 2 more games in the obligatory “We told you you would get 2 playoff games when you signed up but they are not really playoff games you giant loser” bracket. So the fat lady has not quite sounded off but she is inhaling deeply.

There is already discussion about what to do next season, Do we comeback at all? Do we accept being a “casual” team, or try to pick up some players(lose some others) and try to win a few games.? We shall see, I suppose.

More soon.
